Schools
The Mountainair Public School District consists of an elementary school and a senior high/junior high school, with a total of some 387 students in the district. The district covers the town of Mountainair and 950 surrounding square miles, including the communities of Manzano, Punta de Agua, Abo, and Scholle. The student population is 66% Hispanic, 29% Anglo, 3% African-American, 2% Native American. With 30 faculty members, Mountainair Public Schools' average class size is 14 students.


Mountainair High School offers courses to prepare students for university, 4-year or community college, vocational school, the military, or the work place. Advance Placement courses, professional counseling, and electives prepare students for their choices about post-secondary education, training, or employment.
Our high school and junior high school competitive athletics rank among the best in the state. In the 2002-2003 season, the varsity football team took the district championship. The girls volleyball team and the boys and girls basketball teams also competed in the state play-offs. The boys and girls track teams consistently send competitors to the state meet.
District Employees
| Base salary for teachers is
$30,000 per year. The MPS salary schedule
recognizes up to 24 years of out-of-district experience, plus credit
for additional education. The district grants employees ten days of
sick leave a year, three personal days, and three days for non-medical
bereavement leave. For every unused sick day earned per year, the
district will pay the employee $20 per day for up to 90 days. Health insurance covers major medical, vision, and dental. MPS pays 60% - 75% of the premium based on your salary. This policy may be taken out for the individual or the entire family. The Board of Education provides a $50,000 life insurance policy on each employee. Teachers pay into state employee retirement and social security. The district also offers each employee a $1000 tuition reimbursement for courses taken in a pre-approved program. |
